Aged entirely in barrels with 30% new oak, this has all the keys of a warm climate cabernet--black fruits and a powerful, firm structure built from severe tannins. One to take to a barbecue."

"This cabernet is another classic of Chile's modern wine scene. With its first vintage in 1989, it was originally from Curicó and then moved to Colchagua around 1998. Today, 60% of this blend comes from the Marchigüe zone, and the rest is from Apalta. It's 90% cabernet sauvignon with 10% merlot from Marchigüe, and the tannins, tension, and potent texture are very much from that zone in western Colchagua. And that rather rustic texture just begs for food. The flavors are of black fruits in the midst of delicious acidity with an oaky finish that lends complexity without hiding the fruit."

The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then aged in barrels for a year. That toasted, spicy effect is quite perceptible, but so is the ripe black fruit in an intense, but never rustic, wine."

"(2008) Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, the Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the La Finca de Apalta estate, and has around 10% Merlot in the blend. It has a very expressive Cabernet Nose, with a hint of gravy browning, a touch of something vegetal like green olive, and a core of black fruit. The oak is very classy, suggesting cedar and wood smoke. On the palate this is quite firm and authoritative, thanks to a keen spine of acidity and some rich, thick, quite chocolaty tannins. The fruit is hugely sweet, though the wine has a medium-bodied, quite creamy but refined texture and weight. I found a little disjointedness in this wine at present, and would cellar for a year or two to allow the acidity, tannins and fruit to meld together perhaps."
